Mom new to the AG world...any advice or help?

As far as the hair goes, here are some tips.....
--The hair is made of a synthetic, like nylon or plastic. So Never, Ever use dry heat on it--no hair dryers, no hot rollers, no curling irons. If you do, the hair melts and you have instant frizzies.
--For the same reason keep the doll away from other sources of dry heat, like hot radiators.
--Also, since human hair is made of protein and the doll's hair is made of a kind of nylon, don't use human shampoos or conditioners or de-tanglers on the doll hair. You can use shampoos and conditioners made for synthetic wigs--available in beauty care stores like "Sally's" (or something like that).
--Use only the wire brush, and never use the doll's brush on a human, and never use a human brush on the doll. The human hair oils are bad for the synthetic wig, but I don't know how that works.
--When brushing out tangles, very gently brush in small sections at a time, starting at the bottom of each section and gradually working your way up to the top of the hairs in each section.
--Keep the hair moisterized by spritzing it with plain water every once in awhile (once a week? once a month? Can someone speak up on this one?)
--For hair bands, do not use the old brown rubber bands, because they catch on the hairs. Instead, you can use the cloth-covered hair bands (the kind without the metal joint), or the silicone, clear-colorless bands that look like rubber bands.
--Watch out for the "sticky" side of the velcro that is on many of the outfits. If that side of the velcro catches on the hair, it might pull out a hairstyle that you've worked hard on, or it might snag the hair enough to make a little frizzie there. On AG outfits, the "sticky" side of the velcro seems to always be on the doll's right (the human mother's left, as she faces the doll.) One trick that I have often used is to keep my hand between the hair and the velcro on that side, while I'm putting the outfit on. Another trick I've used is to pull all the hair over to the right (human), or the doll's left, over her left shoulder and around to the front of her chest. Some other people have put little sandwich baggies over the doll's head when they were changing outfits.

Welcome to the board! I agree that you should get Kit's bed. Kit's bed is very convienent for two dolls to sleep side by side and can fold up to save space.
